Tzaneen Municipality Unveils Plan to Upgrade Deteriorating Road Infrastructure
Tzaneen Municipality has announced a comprehensive plan to address the deteriorating state of road infrastructure within the municipal area. The initiative aims to rehabilitate key arterial routes and residential streets that have been identified as being in critical disrepair, posing significant challenges to motorists and pedestrians alike. The project is expected to commence in the third quarter of the current financial year, with a phased approach to minimise disruption to daily life.
The municipality acknowledges the long-standing concerns raised by residents regarding potholes, uneven surfaces, and inadequate drainage, which have been exacerbated by recent heavy rainfall. Mr. Sipho Dlamini, the Municipal Manager, stated, "We understand the frustration of our community. This plan is a direct response to their legitimate concerns and represents our commitment to providing safe and reliable infrastructure. We have allocated a substantial budget towards this project, and we are confident that the upgrades will significantly improve the quality of life for all Tzaneen residents."
The proposed upgrades will include extensive resurfacing, patching, and in some areas, complete reconstruction of road sections. Furthermore, attention will be given to improving stormwater drainage systems to prevent future damage and enhance road longevity. Ms. Thandiwe Nkosi, a long-time resident of Nkowankowa, expressed cautious optimism. "We have seen promises before, but the roads in our area are truly terrible. If they can fix the potholes and make it safer for our children to walk to school, that would be a huge relief."
The municipality will be engaging with local contractors and suppliers where possible, aiming to stimulate the local economy and create employment opportunities during the project's duration. Detailed timelines and specific road sections targeted for immediate attention will be communicated to the public in the coming weeks through official municipal channels and local media. Residents are encouraged to report specific road issues via the municipal hotline or website to assist with prioritisation.
