Tzaneen’s tourism sector is actively preparing for the upcoming peak season, with a significant focus on introducing new eco-tourism initiatives designed to enhance visitor experience while promoting environmental sustainability. Local tourism operators and community leaders are optimistic about the potential for these new offerings to attract a wider range of tourists, particularly those interested in responsible travel. Among the key initiatives is the development of several new hiking trails within the Magoebaskloof and Wolkberg regions, emphasising minimal environmental impact and providing educational signage about local flora and fauna. Furthermore, plans are underway to expand guided bird-watching tours and introduce community-based tourism projects that will allow visitors to engage directly with local cultures and support rural economies. Ms. Thandiwe Ndlovu, Head of Tourism Development for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, commented, "Our aim is to position Tzaneen as a premier eco-tourism destination. We are blessed with incredible natural beauty, and it is our responsibility to protect it while allowing both local and international visitors to experience its wonder." Local businesses are also adapting to this shift. Several guesthouses and lodges have begun implementing green practices, such as solar power, water recycling systems, and sourcing local, organic produce. Mr. Peter van der Merwe, owner of a guesthouse in the Haenertsburg area, stated, "We've seen a growing demand for sustainable travel options. Tourists want to know their visit is contributing positively to the environment and the community. These new initiatives are not just good for the planet; they are good for business." The municipality is collaborating with local conservation groups and community leaders to ensure these initiatives are implemented effectively and sustainably. Training programmes for local guides are being rolled out, focusing on environmental conservation, cultural sensitivity, and first aid. This collaborative approach aims to empower local communities and ensure the long-term success of Tzaneen’s eco-tourism ventures.
